NASA’S MOONSCAPES

Art Activates Lunar Science

Explore our solar system through visual art! Enjoy this Lunar Edition of our NASA program Art & the Cosmic Connection. Learn to decipher the complex geologic stories of Earth’s satellite using the Elements of Art. Lines, shapes, color, value and texture become “clues” to explore the cosmos. Hone inquiry and observation skills with fun art projects in any media ~ pastel, collage, even ceramics. Science inspires art and art empowers deep science learning!

Program Implementation

Overview

  • A&CC connects visual art concepts to the analysis of satellite images. This version is customized to launch a deep dive into investigations of Earth’s moon!

  • Download presentations, planners, & resources below. Print and laminate NASA inspiration images. Watch the introductory PD videos to get started.

  • You can use any media for the art project. We love to use soft pastel and have included supply lists in the Educator Guide.

You can also create with collage, oil pastel, painting, mixed-media and even ceramics. Collect supplies based how you would like to implement the art project.

  • Explore our gallery of student work for inspiration. Be creative as you customize this program for your community. Watch the slideshow of class examples and think of ways you can tailor for your learners.

  • Present the PowerPoint presentation in class. The Solar System Tour will introduce kids to key concepts. They will explore how the Elements of Art connect to planetary science. Then they will use their NASA moon prints to inspire art making in the media of your choice.

  • Download the PDF of NASA Moon images. They included a variety of imaging techniques and have amazing color! Laminate to use again an again to inspire art-making.

Use any art media of your choice to make works inspired by NASA images ~ pastel, mixed media, painting, etc. Learners will hone observation skills and critical thinking as they create.

Lunar Version Adaptations

Customize Your Content & Media

Our NASA A&CC program is designed to easily adapt storylines by customizing your presentation and selecting specific NASA prints to inspire inquiry and art-making. You can also customize the media choice for the visual art portion of the program. Follow these basic steps to adapt our program for a deep dive into Lunar Science. Great for in-class, sky parties and eclipse celebrations!

Implementation Steps

1) Customize the Solar System Tour presentation by selecting specific slides and share with your class.

2) Explore additional NASA Lunar Science Resources of your choice with the links below.

3) Have students select NASA Moon Prints to inspire their creativity, inquiry & discovery.

4) Make cool art informed by NASA images in the visual art media of your choice.

5) Encourage questions, discussion and sharing as students connect the Elements of Art to their observations and creative process.
